mbl.is - Teenagers with a foreign background feel worst.

14. Jan 2008

Results from a new research among young people in Iceland, where the topic was their psychological condition, showed that foreigners are feeling a lot worse in Iceland, then the Icelandic ones. These are the results from a research the University of Akureyri acknowledged last Friday on the symposium of immigrants and the ministry of social- and insurance about the governments plan of implementation regarding foreigners in Iceland.

According to the chief of investigation, Þoroddur Bjarnason, professor in Sociology at the University of Akureyri, the young people of a foreign race, are for example more depressed and have lower self-esteem. "They are persecuted more then the others and are less likely to graduate", he says. There is no wonder why most of them don’t consider themselves Icelandic, and a quarter of them is determent in moving away for good when they grow up".
